Upsilon-List

Upsilon-List Quick Reference: What is the Upsilon-List?
The Upsilon-List is yet another way the brothers communicate with one another through the internet. A brother who is subscribed to the List can send email to the List (called posting to the List). All brothers who are subscribed to it will receive a copy of that email.

Is this like Majordomo or Mailing List from school?
Yes

Can anyone join the Upsilon-List?
Only members of the Upsilon Sigma Phi and the Sigma Delta Phi can join the Upsilon-List. The Upsilon-List is a closed mailing list.

How do I join the Upsilon-List?
You may subscribe by filling out the form found in "Subscribe to the Upsilon-List" page.

Are there any guidelines that I should be aware of?
There are some rules, most of them are to facilitate the communication process and insure the relative privacy of our discussions.

1.) The best way to post is to simply send new mail to upsilon-list@yahoogroups.com

2.) Per-message distribution is the default. To change to the daily digest, send a blank message to upsilon-list-digest@yahoogroups.com .

3.) Computer viruses are a pain. Please set your 'Default email preference' to PLAIN TEXT only. Profile settings can be changed at http://groups.yahoo.com/myprefs

Attachments are automatically discarded. In the Upsilon-List, all attachments are removed from the messages and digests. This is a STRICT ENFORCEMENT of our Upsilon Net Security policy.

4.) Please cut and paste when posting to the Upsilon-List. Consider changing the Subject Heading. A little time spent on polishing your text adds considerable pleasure to the reader.

5.) Please use discretion. Know when it is time to move the discussion to private email. Trolling and Flaming are not allowed.

6.) Please remember that the internet by its very nature is not secure. Remember our Fraternity Rules.

When changing email addresses, please remember to unsubscribe the old email address and delete old messages.

7.) Subscription to the Upsilon-List is dependent upon one of us to verify the identity and email address of a new subscriber. Failure to vouch, means a brother or sister is waiting.

Is it appropriate to post Ads on the Upsilon-List?
It is not appropriate to post Ads on the Upsilon-List. The Upsilon-List is also covered by the Terms of Use which state "Users agree not to use the site for sale, trade or other commercial purposes." The Upsilon-List Moderator will take necessary steps to prevent spamming or targeting of its subscribers.

What is the process of vouching ?
A brother or sister must vouch for a new subscriber. Vouching means verifying by email or phone that the email address belongs to a tried and true Upsilonian or Sigma Deltan. NO ACTION WILL BE TAKEN until the verification process is complete.

How do I unsubscribe, I no longer wish to receive the Upsilon-List ?
Brods can unsubscribe at anytime by sending email to upsilon-list-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com

I am currently subscribed but have changed email address. Do I have to resubscribe again ?
The subscribe feature is moderated. Although you can unsubscribe yourself at anytime, you will not be able to subscribe yourself back. You do not have to fill out the Subscription Form, however you must contact the Upsilon-List Moderator to insure continuous service. You may also send a posting to the Upsilon-List notifying the brothers and sisters of the change of email address.

I am going on vacation, I want to unsubscribe temporarily ?
You can put your email message delivery on hold. Send a blank message to upsilon-list-nomail@yahoogroups.com . To resume your Upsilon-List delivery, send a blank message to upsilon-list-digest@yahoogroups.com or upsilon-list-normal@yahoogroups.com depending on your delivery preference.

What is a digest version?
When you subscribe to the List, we normally flag your email address for the individual email version. The digest version contains all the individual email messages but are sent to you in a group. Brothers prefer this method, reading them at a later time and at a more leisurely pace.

To change to the daily digest version. Send a blank message to upsilon-list-digest@yahoogroups.com .

Can I have two subscriptions?
Yes, depending on what you want to do. Here are the most common scenarios:

1.) I have two email addresses and I want to be able to send from both but only receive all the brothers postings from one address.  An alternate email address allows you to post from multiple addresses while receiving the list on only one address. Please go to http://groups.yahoo.com/myprefs . Edit your profile and enter up to 5 email addresses (maximum allowed) as alternate addresses.

2.) I want to receive both the digest version and a per-message distribution. In this scenario, we subscribe both email addresses; one for the digest version, the other for the per-message distribution.

I want to reply to a posting, without sending it to the world?
When you reply to a posting from the Upsilon-List, your reply is sent to all subscribed. This is the default. You need to specify the return address if you do not want to send it to the world.

I am receiving postings from the Upsilon-List but I can not post to it. It tells me that I am unauthorized.
If you are receiving the new Upsilon-List but can not post or are getting a "Not subscribed" message, this means that an alternate email address has to be created.

Please go to http://groups.yahoo.com/myprefs . Edit your profile and enter up to 5 email addresses (maximum allowed) as alternate addresses. This option allows you to post messages but not receive them.
