SEA Games Update: Timmy Chua ‘02 wins bronze medal!

Raphael “Timmy” Chua ‘02 took home the bronze medal in the men’s 100m breast finals of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games at the Trace Aquatics Center in Los Banos last November 30. Chua came out strong in the first 50 meters of the event while battling 2003 SEA Games silver winner Vorrawuti Aumpiwan of Thailand. But Vietnam’s Huu Viet Nguyen came surging from the eighth lane to take the gold. Nguyen, bronze winner in 2003, clocked 1:03.80 for the gold, followed by Aumpiwan who timed 1:04.01, while Chua came in at 1:04.35. Congratulations brod!

USPNA funds Philippine Collegian renovation

The Upsilon Sigma Phi Alumni Association - North America (USPNA) donated US$1,000.00 to the Philippine Collegian office renovation fund. A check for fifty-five thousand pesos was turned over by former USPNA chairman Antonio “Slats” Donesa ‘52 (third from left) to Philippine Collegian editor in chief Juan Paolo E. Colet ‘04 (center) during simple ceremonies at the Hotel Intercontinental Manila last November 3. Also in the photo are USPAA board members Francisco “Jun” Aniag ‘66, Nazario S. Racoma ‘54, USPAA president Danilo A. Gozo ‘67, USPAA chairman Claudio “Doni” Altura ‘54 and Collegian managing editor Edgar Joseph S. Miranda ‘04.  The Upsilon Sigma Phi Alumni Association (USPAA) earlier donated twenty thousand pesos to the Philippine Collegian renovation fund.

Carlos Lorenzo L. Vega ‘98 is AIM SA chairman

Aside from being the youngest student at the Asian Institute of Management, Carlos Lorenzo L. Vega ‘98 is the incumbent AIM Student Association chairman.

AIM co-chairman Jose Cuisia Jr. graces ceremony as guest speaker

THE OFFICERS of the AIM Student Association (S.A.) for School Year 2005-2006 took their oath of office at the AIM Conference Center last August 16. Mr. Jose Cuisia Jr., AIM co-chairman, delivered the keynote address as well as presided over the induction of officers.

Ms. Ofelia Odilao-Bisnar, executive managing director of Student Services, Admissions, and Registration, rendered the opening remarks.

A token of appreciation was presented to Mr. Cuisia by new SA chairman Carlos Lorenzo Vega (MBA ’06), SA vice chairman Abhra Dam (MBA ‘07), and SA overseas president Mayank Bidawatka (MBA ‘06).

Certificates of recognition were awarded to Ferdinand Alido (MBA ’05) and Nishant Gandhi (MBA ’06), SA chairman and vice chairman, respectively, during School Year 2004-2005.

Mr. Alex Tanwangco (MBA ’73), president of the Alumni Association of AIM - Philippine Chapter, gave a special message. To cap the ceremony, new SA chairman Carlos Vega delivered the closing remarks.

TBWA Santiago Mangada Puno of which Jacinto “Tong” S. Puno ‘65 is a managing partner, was named 4AsP’s Agency of the Year for 2004, besting four other formidable contenders – BBDO Guerrero Ortega, Campaigns & Grey, Jimenez Basic and McCann Erickson. TBWA/SMP had a back-to-back finish having won the 2003 derby.

Ambassador Espiritu Cup set at Manila Golf

The Upsilon Sigma Phi, the oldest and most esteemed fraternity in the University of the Philippines, will stage the first Ambassador Edgardo B. Espiritu Cup on Nov. 14 with officials of the country’s top private and government corporations expected to see action with the members of the Upsilonians na Pumapalo at the Manila Golf Club inside the posh Forbes Park.

Sen. Richard J. Gordon ‘68 and the Araneta Center, Inc. receive LGU honors

The Province of Cavite gave the Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo Achievement Award to Sen. Richard J. Gordon ‘68 last October 14 for his contributions to community service. The award is Cavite’s highest honor to civilians for achievements in their respective fields of endeavor. Only on its third year, the award was also given to former Cavite governor Juanito R. Remulla ‘51 in 2003 and retired SC Justice Jose C. Campos Jr. ‘41 in 2004.

In Quezon City, the Araneta Center, Inc. owned by Jorge L. Araneta ‘53 was named Outstanding Business Enterprise and Corporate Citizen for 2005 by the Quezon City Government during its 66th Foundation Day Anniversary - Gawad Parangal 2005 held last October 12. Also honored was former QC mayor Ismael A. Mathay Jr. ‘50 for various achievements and programs during his term as mayor from 1992 to 2001.

Ricardo M. Lantican ‘51 is next National Scientist

Dr. Ricardo M. Lantican ‘51 will be the newest name in the roster of the Order of National Scientists (Order ng mga Pambansang Alagad ng Agham). Dr. Lantican was nominated by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) to receive the rank and title of National Scientist, the highest possible honor that can be bestowed upon a distinguished individual scientist, and is conferred by the President of the Philippines. He was elected into the NAST in 1988 for his research on cytoplasmic inheritance of hypersensitivity to a disease in maize, a discovery that has created an awareness among biologists of the importance of genetic diversity as a weapon against environmental adversities.

Medicine brods make waves!

Good news from UP Manila! Medicine Student Council chairperson Benjo A. Delarmente ‘05 was selected UP Manila Outstanding Student for 2005 while UP Manila USC chairperson Albert Francis E. Domingo ‘04, also from the College of Medicine, was one of two students selected to represent the Philippines in the ASEAN Campus Journalists/Leaders Exchange Programme (Phase I - Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia) from October 3 to 21. To cap it off, Dr. Christopher Gauguin P. Gamboa ‘92 topped the Diplomate Board Examinations for Orthopedics.

Upsilonians to see action in 23rd SEA Games

Olympian Raphael “Timmy” Chua ‘02 and ASEAN University Games Gold medalist Evan Grabador ‘04 will represent the country in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games - Philippines 2005. Fresh from their training in China, they already saw action in the recently concluded UAAP swimming championships where they won 5 and 4 gold medals respectively.
